Sukukansojen ystävät would like to wish the City of Hancock a very happy Heikinpäivä! Today, January 24th, marks the beginning of the Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture 2026 in Hancock. We wish you all the best for the new year and look forward to our future collaboration and participation!
A winter storm has arrived in North America, and the snow has brought changes and cancellations to the weekend’s program. We hope everything goes well and everyone stays safe and warm!
The main event for the Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture 2026 will be at Juhannus 2026, and the Sukukansojen ystävät delegation is already making travel arrangements and planning how we could best contribute to the program. Please follow Sukukansojen ystävät’s and Heikinpäivä’s pages on Facebook to find out about other upcoming events! The competition for the next Cultural Capital will soon be announced on the Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture website.
Throughout the year, we will also be expanding our website to include more content in English. We have already designed a printed flyer about Finno-Ugric topics, but there is certainly a need for a variety of materials that explore these themes from different viewpoints and take into account different audiences, as the Finno-Ugric peoples as a concept is not overly familiar in the North American context.
At the same time, Hancock – and Finnish Americans in general – is a topic we are eager to learn more about and to make better known in Finland and in the Finnish language.

Suomalais-ugrilainen kulttuuripääkaupunki Amerikassa
Vuoden 2026 suomalais-ugrilaiseksi kulttuuripääkaupungiksi valittiin viime kesänä Hancock Michiganin Yläniemimaalla. Tänään lauantaina vietetään Heikinpäivää, joka on amerikansuomalaisten tärkeimpiä vuotuisia juhlia. Onnittelemme lämpimästi Hancockin kaupunkia!
Sukukansojen ystävät ry työskentelee tiiviisti osana suomalais-ugrilaisen kulttuuripääkaupungin sihteeristöä. Laajennamme englanninkielistä viestintäämme tämän vuoden aikana, ja kehitämme yhteistyötä Euroopan suomalais-ugrilaisten tahojen ja amerikkalaisten yhteistyökumppaneidemme kesken.
